Most people choose agarbatti in the same way. They smell the box, pick a familiar fragrance like Chandan or Rose, and take it home.

But there is one important question very few people ask:

What exactly is burning inside the agarbatti every morning?

We carefully check the purity of the things we eat or apply to our skin. But what about the things we inhale?

Most people do not know what they are actually burning. They assume that if they have bought a Chandan agarbatti, they are burning real Chandan. But that is often not true.

Look at the ingredients and you may realise that what you are actually burning is charcoal, wood powder and artificial fragrance. Of course, no one can realistically expect real Chandan in a ₹20–₹30 packet.

That is why we have created this guide. No matter where you buy your agarbatti from, check these five things first.

1. What Is the Stick Made From?

Most agarbattis use a bamboo core because it is cheaper and widely available. But when bamboo burns, it can create additional smoke, soot and fine particles, especially in closed rooms.

It may also leave behind more ash and add a burnt smell that interferes with the actual fragrance.

That is why it is important to check whether your agarbatti is made using bamboo, charcoal or a cleaner bamboo-less base.

2. What Actually Burns When You Light the Incense?

Many commonly available agarbattis contain bamboo, charcoal, wood powder, synthetic binders and artificial perfume oils.

The fragrance may smell strong initially but fade within a few minutes, while the fillers continue burning and leaving behind smoke, ash and a burnt smell.

That is probably why some incense sticks smell pleasant for the first few minutes but fail to maintain the same experience throughout their burn.

Check the ingredients and look for incense made using a natural base, herbs and aromatic ingredients instead of relying only on a strong initial fragrance.

3. How Does It Smell After Lighting?

Smelling an unburnt agarbatti can be misleading.

A stick may smell wonderful inside the box, but the real test begins only after you light it.

After a few minutes, ask yourself:

Does the fragrance remain pleasant while burning?

Does the room start smelling burnt?

Does the fragrance become too sharp?

Does the smoke overpower the actual aroma?

Do you feel like opening a window immediately?

Does someone at home ask you to put it out early?

A good incense experience should not depend only on how strong the fragrance is. It should feel comfortable in your puja room, your home and around the people living with you.

You should also check whether the fragrance materials used by the brand meet recognised fragrance-safety standards.

4. How Much Smoke Does It Produce?

All incense produces some smoke because something is being burned. However, the amount and nature of the smoke can differ depending on the materials used in the stick.

Try a simple test.

Light your regular agarbatti in a well-ventilated room and observe it for a few minutes.

Check whether:

The smoke feels excessive for the size of the room.

The room starts appearing hazy.

A strong burnt smell remains afterwards.

The fragrance disappears behind the smoke.

The ash falls unevenly or creates unnecessary mess.

Many people assume that heavier smoke means a stronger agarbatti. But more smoke does not necessarily mean a better fragrance experience.

For everyday puja and smaller rooms, many families prefer incense made without a bamboo core.

5. What Remains After the Fragrance Fades?

Many agarbattis smell strong during the first few minutes. But once the fragrance becomes lighter, the bamboo, charcoal and other base materials continue burning.

Ask yourself:

Does a burnt smell remain?

Can you still notice the actual fragrance?

Does the room smell smoky rather than pleasant?

A good agarbatti should be judged throughout its entire burn—not only during the first minute.
